You’re not the best writer in the world? Join the club!
It’s a weird business we’re in. The more books you write, the more difficult it tends to get. I think it’s because writers are always learning. And if you take writing seriously, the more you do it, the more layers you add to your writing, the more things you notice in your writing, the more things there are to pay attention to as you write…the more you realize what things come easy and what things are really (excruciatingly) difficult.
The thing is, all writers are bad at something.
If you try to run away from your weaknesses or ignore them or minimize them, the next book you write, guess what? Those weaknesses will come back.
The trick is to lean toward them instead. Sit down and have a nice chat with them. Figure out why they’re there. That’s the only way that you can fix them.
No one is the best writer in the world but, with some work, we can all get better.
